Middlesbrough is home to a wide range of medical practitioners, dental services, care services, health, sports and therapy providers, as well as research and development specialists.

The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough is one of Europe’s most modern hospitals. It is the largest hospital in the area, serving the Tees Valley, East Cleveland, North Yorkshire, and Durham. A major trauma centre, it provides a wide range of general and specialist services including neurosciences, renal medicine, spinal injuries, major trauma, cardiothoracic, vascular surgery and cancer services.

The South Tees Institute of Learning, Research and Innovation is based at James Cook and forms part of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Institute brings together all of the Trust’s learning, research, training and development functions into one.

The One Life Centre is a part-NHS, part-private health facility and GP practice in the Linthorpe area of Middlesbrough. There are also plans to open a state of the art centre in Acklam. The centre will include consulting and treatment rooms, specialist suites, operating theatres and recovery bays, a 19-bed in-patient ward, and diagnostic suite including X-ray and ultrasound.

The Live Well Centre is a unique wellbeing hub offering a wide range of support for people in Middlesbrough, who want to lead healthier and happier lives. It provides a ‘one-stop shop’ of support in three core strands from its base in Middlesbrough town centre at Dundas House:

  • Think Well: promoting positive mental health and happiness;
  • Energise Well: advocating the benefits of eating a balanced diet and having an active lifestyle;
  • Quit Well: support for those who wish to stop smoking, reduce their alcohol intake, stop using drugs, or move away from other risk-taking behaviour.

These are all underpinned by a philosophy of working in collaboration with like-minded organisations to ensure social inclusion and wellbeing support.
