Middlesbrough’s “City Centre Living” is being promoted on the back of ongoing major building renovations.

Important regeneration projects currently underway include the Albert North project along the stretch of Albert Road between Middlesbrough Town Hall and the railway station.

The project, by local property developers Jomast, includes new office space, provision for food and drink outlets and the opportunity for city centre living in Middlesbrough’s “Historic Quarter”.

Another major regeneration project has been St James House further along Albert Road facing Centre Square on the corner opposite the Holiday Inn Express.

The building has recently been converted by Atha Developments, another local company, from empty office space to high quality apartments available to professionals desiring city centre living or student accommodation.

Cllr Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Deputy Mayor and Executive Member for City Centre Strategy, said high quality homes in the city heart as well as Gresham and Middlehaven can contribute to desirable city living.

He said: “Part of our work in our City Centre Strategy has been to improve the balance between retail and office working – all of the statistics show it is out of kilter and we need to bring in more office workers to have that healthy city centre balance.

“However, what we have not spoken about enough is the need for a healthy city centre living population like you would in any other city in the UK.

“We know there are thousands of students at Teesside University living in the heart of Middlesbrough and making a great contribution to the local economy but there are many benefits to living in the centre of a city region.

“At the moment a proposal to develop a student village in the Gresham area behind The Crown is moving forward and there will still be land available to create the kind of homes people aspire to live in.”
